The current state of the economy and the resulting cost of living crisis poses day-to-day challenges for a lot of Australians. Whilst most of us have felt its impact in one way or another, it is sadly disproportionately affecting our most vulnerable community members and pushing more Australian people into poverty.
Founded in 2003, the team at StreetSmart believes everyone should have a safe and secure place to call home. They exist to support people who are fleeing domestic violence, recovering from natural disasters, or moving into accommodation after experiencing homelessness. With funds raised, they seek out, support and partner with smaller, grassroots, homeless services through unique, location-based, collaborative community grants programs across Australia.
StreetSmart is a small team with a big impact. In 20 years, they've distributed over $11,000,000 to combat homelessness in Australia.
We're proud to be partnering with StreetSmart in supporting their 'Making a Home' project. 100% of profits raised at Worn for Good throughout July, Aug and Sep will go directly to supporting vulnerable Australians who are currently facing rental stress, eating fewer meals, and can’t afford the basics to make a place of residence feel like home.
The Making a Home project supports people who are fleeing violence at home, recovering from natural disasters, or moving into accommodation after experiencing homelessness. The focus communities include domestic violence victims, youth, migrants, LGBTQIA+ and Indigenous communities.
Securing any type of affordable housing is incredibly difficult, especially for those on a low income. When affordable housing is eventually secured, it is crucial that people are supported in making their house a home, and avoid going into immediate debt when purchasing essentials like furniture, white goods, or kitchenware and tenancy bonds.
To date, this project has supported 265 households with $226,000 of funding.
With funds raised, each household is provided with up to $1,000 to secure white goods, kitchenware, bedding, linen, food and groceries. Every dollar raised has a meaningful impact:
- $30 towards kitchenware
- $70 towards soft furnishing
- $125 towards household items
- $250 towards white goods
- $1,000 towards setting someone up for tenancy success.
The below case study shows the impact that funds raised by StreetSmart are able to have on individuals and families facing financial hardship
CASE STUDY - Juno, on Wurundjeri Country (VIC).
Juno supported a single mother with two children who had lost their home due to a relationship breakdown. They were supported in emergency hotel accommodation but due to one of the children living with physical disability and the family experiencing financial difficulty, it was challenging to find a property that was accessible and affordable. After 6 months of sharing one hotel room and much advocating, the family finally received an offer of long term public housing, but because of their situation, they had no household items or furniture to move to the new property with. Through Streetsmart funding, Juno was able to provide $600 worth of funds, so the family were able to purchase essential kitchenware and bedding items. This funding greatly assisted the family in establishing their new long-term tenancy and settling into their home comfortably, after almost half a year of instability and uncertainty.
